CTP Exercise Physiology.
Exercise physiology after a motor vehicle accident
A motor vehicle accident can produce significant and lasting physical consequences — not just acute injuries, but the deconditioning, chronic pain, fatigue and functional limitations that develop when injuries are not adequately rehabilitated. Exercise physiology plays an important and often underutilised role in CTP rehabilitation, particularly for patients managing chronic pain, significant deconditioning, musculoskeletal injuries requiring progressive loading, and the cardiovascular and metabolic consequences of prolonged inactivity following an accident.
At Articulate Physiotherapy in Tarragindi, our Accredited Exercise Physiologist Ash O'Regan accepts CTP insurance claims with no out-of-pocket expense once insurer approval has been obtained. We liaise directly with your claim manager throughout your rehabilitation, handling the administrative requirements so you can focus entirely on your recovery.
Is there an out-of-pocket expense?
There is no out-of-pocket expense for our CTP exercise physiology appointments once you have written approval from your insurer. We invoice your CTP insurer directly and liaise with your claim manager throughout your rehabilitation. You will need to provide us with a copy of your approval paperwork and your claim number so we can invoice them directly.
What injuries and conditions does CTP exercise physiology cover?
CTP funded exercise physiology covers the exercise rehabilitation component of motor vehicle accident injury management. It is particularly relevant for:
How many appointments can I access?
The number of approved exercise physiology appointments depends on your injury, your recovery trajectory and your insurer's assessment. At your first appointment we conduct a comprehensive assessment of your current physical capacity, functional limitations and rehabilitation goals, and develop a structured exercise program which we submit to your insurer for approval. As your rehabilitation progresses we work directly with your claim manager to obtain ongoing approval for further sessions as clinically required.
What does a CTP exercise physiology program involve?
Your initial assessment covers your current fitness level, strength, pain levels and functional capacity — establishing your baseline and identifying the specific deficits most relevant to your rehabilitation goals. Your exercise program is then designed to address these deficits progressively, with each session building systematically on the last.
Exercise sessions at Articulate are supervised and individualised — not generic group exercise. Programs typically combine progressive resistance training, cardiovascular conditioning, functional movement retraining and pain management through graded activity exposure. Clinical Pilates is available as part of the rehabilitation program where appropriate.
We provide all required clinical reporting and documentation to your insurer and cooperate with any medico-legal assessment requirements throughout your claim. Where physiotherapy is also part of your rehabilitation, our physiotherapy and exercise physiology teams work collaboratively to ensure a coordinated approach — see our CTP physiotherapy page for detail on the physiotherapy component.
For workplace injuries managed through WorkCover rather than CTP, see our WorkCover exercise physiology page.
Our Accredited Exercise Physiologist Ash O'Regan is a member of Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA) and has experience in CTP rehabilitation. For information about CTP insurance in Queensland, visit the Motor Accident Insurance Commission at maic.qld.gov.au.

What injuries and conditions does CTP exercise physiology cover?
CTP funded exercise physiology covers the exercise rehabilitation component of motor vehicle accident injury management. It is particularly relevant for:
- Chronic pain and central sensitisation following motor vehicle accidents — graded exercise exposure and progressive conditioning are among the most evidence-based interventions for chronic post-accident pain, reducing pain sensitivity and restoring physical capacity through carefully dosed exercise progression.
- Significant deconditioning from prolonged immobilisation or reduced activity following accident-related injuries — structured exercise physiology rebuilds the cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength and functional capacity needed to return to work and daily activities.
- Whiplash and cervical spine injuries — progressive cervical and upper limb strengthening following the acute physiotherapy phase.
- Lower back injuries — progressive lumbar and core strengthening and graded return to functional activities.
- Fracture rehabilitation — progressive loading and strengthening following fracture healing.
- Return to work conditioning — structured programs building the specific physical capacity required for the patient's occupational demands, particularly for physically demanding roles.
- Psychological sequelae — anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress are common after motor vehicle accidents, and exercise physiology contributes meaningfully to mental health outcomes as part of a multidisciplinary rehabilitation approach.
