Pregnancy-Related Issues Physiotherapy
Moving and feeling better through pregnancy
Pregnancy asks an enormous amount of your body in a short space of time. Over nine months your posture shifts, your centre of gravity moves forward, the hormone relaxin softens your ligaments to prepare for birth, your abdominal muscles stretch and separate, and your growing baby progressively changes how you load your spine, pelvis and hips. For many women this produces aches, pains and movement difficulties that can range from a minor nuisance to something that genuinely affects sleep, work and daily life.
The good news is that pregnancy-related pain is common, well understood, and very treatable. You do not have to simply endure it as an inevitable part of pregnancy — physiotherapy can meaningfully reduce pain, restore comfortable movement and keep you active right through to birth and into your recovery. At Articulate Physiotherapy in Tarragindi, our women's health physiotherapists provide individualised, evidence-based care for the full range of pregnancy-related musculoskeletal issues.
Common pregnancy-related issues we treat
Pregnancy-related back pain affects the majority of pregnant women at some point. The combination of postural change, ligamentous laxity, abdominal muscle stretch and increased spinal loading produces lower back pain that responds well to manual therapy, targeted exercise, postural advice and support strategies.
Pelvic girdle pain and symphysis pubis dysfunction is pain in the sacroiliac joints, pubic symphysis and surrounding pelvis — one of the most common and most disabling pregnancy complaints. Early assessment and management significantly reduces its impact on walking, sleep, work and daily activity.
Diastasis recti (abdominal separation) is the separation of the abdominal muscles along the midline that occurs as the abdominal wall accommodates your growing baby. Real time ultrasound lets us directly assess the separation and guide the safe, effective deep abdominal retraining that supports your trunk during pregnancy and recovery afterward.
Postural changes during pregnancy — the shift in spinal curves and centre of gravity as pregnancy progresses — can contribute to back, neck and rib pain that is readily addressed through posture education and exercise.
Return to running after pregnancy — once you are ready in the postnatal period, our structured return to running assessment and program helps you rebuild safely without compromising your pelvic floor and abdominal recovery.
How physiotherapy helps
Your physiotherapist will begin with a thorough assessment — understanding your symptoms, your stage of pregnancy, your activity levels and your goals — before tailoring a management plan to your specific presentation. Depending on your needs this may include hands-on manual therapy to ease pain and improve joint mobility, individualised exercise to build the strength and control that supports your changing body, advice on posture, movement and daily activities, and support garment or belt prescription where helpful. Throughout, the focus is on keeping you comfortable, active and confident in your body as your pregnancy progresses.
How clinical Pilates helps
Our clinical exercise classes and Prenatal Pilates 8-week course provide a safe, supervised environment to build the deep core, pelvic floor and postural strength that supports a comfortable pregnancy and a faster postnatal recovery. Led by our physiotherapists and exercise physiologist — clinicians who understand the specific considerations of each trimester — every exercise is selected and modified for pregnancy. Many women continue clinical Pilates right through their pregnancy and transition into our Postnatal Mums and Bubs course afterward.
A note on pelvic floor and internal assessment
Our team provides the external musculoskeletal assessment and rehabilitation that addresses the majority of pregnancy-related presentations. For concerns requiring internal pelvic floor examination — significant pelvic floor dysfunction, prolapse symptoms or pelvic pain needing internal assessment — we refer to a trusted specialist pelvic floor physiotherapist within our referral network, and are very happy to help you find the right person.
