Common cricket injuries

The bowling action combines lumbar hyperextension, lateral flexion and rotation — all under high compressive load — at a frequency that can reach 10,000 to 20,000 deliveries per season in a high-volume bowler. Spondylolysis — stress fractures of the pars interarticularis — are the most characteristic cricket injury, occurring almost exclusively in fast bowlers, typically in adolescent and young adult players whose growth plates are still vulnerable to this loading pattern. Lumbar disc injuries and facet joint pain are the other common lower back presentations in bowlers. Load management — bowling workload monitoring across overs, sessions and weeks — is the most important preventive intervention.
Side strains — oblique muscle tears from the explosive trunk rotation and lateral flexion of the bowling and batting actions — are one of the most common acute injuries in cricket and one of the most frequently mismanaged. The internal oblique is the most commonly affected muscle. Return to bowling after a side strain requires a structured graduated throwing and bowling program rather than a simple time-based return — premature return is the primary driver of recurrence.
Shoulder injuries in bowlers and fielders — rotator cuff tendinopathy, shoulder impingement, AC joint injury from diving, and glenohumeral instability in bowlers — reflect the high overhead demands of bowling and the throwing loads of fielding. The wicketkeeper faces specific shoulder demands from the repeated catching and throwing position.
Hamstring injuries from the explosive sprinting of running between wickets, chasing in the field and bowling run-ups are the most common acute muscle injury in cricket. The transition from a standing or walking state to explosive sprinting — particularly without adequate warm-up — is a high-risk pattern in batting and fielding.
