Exercise Physiology.
Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEPs) are university-qualified allied health professionals specialising in the prescription of clinical exercise for the prevention, management and rehabilitation of injuries and chronic medical conditions. They are the highest-qualified exercise professionals in Australia — combining university-level training in anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology and exercise science with specific clinical skills in exercise prescription for people with medical conditions or injuries.
The distinction between an exercise physiologist and a personal trainer is significant and clinically important. Exercise physiologists are trained to work with people who have diagnosed medical conditions, complex health histories and post-surgical presentations where exercise needs to be precisely calibrated to the individual's physiology rather than applied generically.
Articulate's exercise physiology service
At Articulate Physiotherapy in Tarragindi, our Accredited Exercise Physiologist Ash O'Regan delivers highly individualised, evidence-based exercise programs designed to optimise long-term health, function and quality of life. Every program is built around the individual's specific presentation, health history, medical conditions and goals — not a generic protocol.
Exercise physiology appointments at Articulate are one-on-one and unhurried. Ash works collaboratively with your GP, physiotherapist and other treating providers to ensure your exercise program is coordinated and aligned with your overall management plan. Progress reports are provided to your GP or referring practitioner as required by the funding pathway.
Who can benefit from exercise physiology?
Exercise physiology is appropriate across a wide range of presentations. Ash works with patients managing chronic conditions including diabetes and metabolic disease, cardiovascular disease, pulmonary disease, neurological conditions including Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis and stroke, osteoporosis and osteopenia, arthritis, chronic pain including fibromyalgia, PCOS, sports injuries and prevention, pre- and post-surgical rehabilitation, cancer rehabilitation, mental health conditions, women's health including pregnancy and postpartum exercise, and general deconditioning and performance enhancement.
