Mauricio is a senior Physiotherapist and Exercise Physiologist with over 11 years of clinical experience in both public and private settings. After starting his career working with complex brain injuries in pediatric populations, he quickly developed a love of complex musculoskeletal physiotherapy. He also holds a passion for performance enhancement at all levels, and has experience working with elite athletes including The Queensland Ballet, The Western Australian Ballet, The Firebirds (netball), Commonwealth Games and Olympic track and field athletes as well as ultra-marathon runners to name a few.
Mauricio in recent years has developed a strong interest in tendon injuries, as well as supporting back to running programs (particularly in the post-partum population). Women's health in an elite athlete population has been a particular joy for him to treat.
As a dual-degree holder in both exercise physiology and physiotherapy, Mauricio is a holistic in his treatment approach and is able to combine skilled hands-on therapy with simple and effective exercise prescription. He is a thoughtful and attentive physiotherapist who is passionate about continuing to study to ensure his treatments are evidence based and best practice. He has previously lectured at QUT, and enjoys mentoring early career physiotherapists and exercise physiologists. He wrote and taught anatomy and biomechanics in the Stretch Yoga teacher training program from 2018 - 2023 and has a strong understanding of physiotherapy for yoga injuries and practitioners.
In 2019 Mauricio opened Articulate Physiotherapy with his wife PJ, and alongside his practitioner duties is also our current clinical Director. Opening his own practice has enabled him to continue to enhance and refine his knowledge and skillset, and he truly enjoys the diversity he experiences through the clinic. In mentoring more junior physiotherapists and exercise physiologists he has established a strong culture of learning at Articulate with weekly in-service sessions on a variety of topics as well as 1:1 mentoring.
Outside of work he has two young children (a daughter and a son) and recently married his lovely wife PJ after numerous Covid delays. In his spare time he enjoys boxing, strength training, spending time at the beach and playing with his fast growing up children. Although raised in Australia, his parents are from El Salvador (where he was born) and Mauricio is bilingual speaking both English and Spanish in treatments.
