Physiotherapist & Exercise Physiologist Led Pilates and Clinical Exercise Classes.
Clinical exercise with a physiotherapist or exercise physiologist
Clinical exercise classes at Articulate are fundamentally different from general Pilates or gym-based exercise. Every class is led by a qualified physiotherapist or accredited exercise physiologist — not a fitness instructor — and every participant attends with a specific injury, condition or rehabilitation goal that has been assessed before they begin. The result is a class that delivers the physical benefits of Pilates and progressive exercise with the clinical oversight and individual modification that rehabilitation requires.
This matters for patients who are managing an injury, recovering from surgery, dealing with a chronic condition, or returning to exercise after a period of inactivity. In a general Pilates class, the instructor may not have the clinical background to modify exercises safely around a significant spinal condition, a post-surgical joint, a hypermobile patient or a person with autonomic dysfunction. In a clinical exercise class at Articulate, your physiotherapist or exercise physiologist does — and they are adapting your program in real time based on your response.
What makes clinical exercise classes different
Classes are capped at a 4:1 ratio — four participants per clinician — ensuring meaningful individual attention throughout every session. Classes run for 60 minutes. Equipment includes reformers, Wunda chairs, barrels and smaller equipment alongside mat-based exercises, giving far greater variety than reformer-only formats.
Every participant completes a clinical assessment before joining — either a full initial physiotherapy or exercise physiology appointment, or a shorter pre-clinical check-in for patients whose presentation is less complex or who have seen us recently. This assessment establishes your baseline, identifies the specific goals and precautions for your program, and ensures the class setting is appropriate.
Your program is individually designed within the group setting — not a class program applied to everyone. Two participants in the same session may be working on entirely different goals with different exercises and different loads.
Private health insurance claiming
Clinical exercise classes are claimable on private health insurance when the following conditions are met — you attend an initial consultation with one of our physiotherapists, you are treating a current health condition or injury that will benefit from exercise, you are covered under code 560 (Group Exercise) for physiotherapist-led classes or code 502 for exercise physiologist-led classes, your condition is showing signs of improvement, and you attend regular review consultations (most funds require at least yearly). We recommend confirming your specific cover with your fund before commencing. We process private health claiming on the spot via HICAPS.
These are claimable on your private health when:
- you attend an initial consult with one of our physiotherapists or exercise physiologists first
- you are treating a current health condition or injury that will benefit from exercise
- you are covered to claim under code ‘560’ (Group Exercise) for physiotherapist led classes, or code '502' for exercise physiologist led classes
- your condition/injury is showing signs of improvement by attending the classes
- you attend regular review consultations (most funds require at least yearly) to assess your progress
- the class does not consist solely of Pilates exercises
Clinical exercise classes are also claimable through GPCCMP, NDIS and WorkCover where those funding arrangements are in place.

What conditions are clinical exercise classes suited for?
Clinical exercise classes are particularly valuable for:

Clinical exercise classes are particularly valuable for:
- Lower back pain and spinal conditions — progressive deep stabiliser and gluteal strengthening in a supervised environment where load can be carefully controlled. Real time ultrasound is available during class for muscle activation feedback.
- Post-surgical rehabilitation — following knee replacement, hip replacement, ACL reconstruction, spinal surgery or shoulder procedures, where progressive loading in a supervised setting is essential during the intermediate rehabilitation phase.
- Hypermobility and EDS — building the dynamic joint stability that hypermobile patients require through carefully graded loading that respects their specific joint constraints.
- Neurological conditions including Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis and stroke rehabilitation — adapted to the specific motor and fatigue challenges of each condition.
- Osteoporosis and healthy aging — resistance training and balance work in a monitored environment. See our dedicated Balance and Bones classes for the specific older adult program.
- Chronic pain — graded exercise exposure in a safe, supported environment with clinical oversight of symptom response and load progression.
- Pregnancy and postnatal rehabilitation — modified for each trimester and postnatal stage. Our Prenatal Pilates 8-week course and Mums and Bubs Postnatal course are the dedicated pregnancy and postnatal programs.
- Sports injury rehabilitation — progressive loading during the intermediate rehabilitation phase between acute physiotherapy and return to sport.
