What made you decide to become a physiotherapist?
Having a background in dance, I’ve always had an interest in movement and physical function. Being a physiotherapist allows me to take that interest and use it to help others. After completing my thesis with professional dancers in training loads and wellness factors, it inspired me to take the next steps into physiotherapy completing a second Masters at UQ. What’s your favourite part of treating clients? Helping clients achieve that “ahh” moment, whether it is because they’ve just gained insight/had an epiphany, felt that exercise really work for the first time, or experienced pain relief. I find it so rewarding to really help patients and enjoy getting to work with a variety of conditions. What’s the biggest myth that people believe about physios, that you wish they didn’t? Physiotherapy is all about heat packs and TENS or Physiotherapy is only for rehab. Physiotherapy is about so much more than either (and definitely more than heat packs and TENS machines!). Physiotherapy is about living your happy and healthiest life with good movement and managing pain well. If you could give one piece of advice to all of your patients, what would it be? Feedback is so important to your treatment journey and something every health professional should value. You are the expert of your own body, so always let me know what you’re experiencing with a treatment or exercise. The more I know about how your body is responding, the better I can help you. Emma is currently using her treatment skills at our Tarragindi physio clinic Tues - Saturday and teaches our Prenatal Pilates and Postnatal Pilates courses.
